About Me

I'm Dan Laurence, a well journeyed learning experience designer, or perhaps co-designer would be more accurate - as empathy and collaboration are central to the way I work. The award winning designs I've worked on always start within a design process grounded in the student experience before constructing towards more academic goals. Combining a background in both technology and online pedagogy I enjoy working in teams passionate about the opportunities that education provides.

I am a Senior Educational Designer & Technologist of nearly ten years standing and with some experience teaching into a Graduate Certificate of Teaching and Learning. Through my work I have partnered closely with academics to co-design many hundreds of subjects in higher education. Recent journal publications and commercialisations of my work have won numerous awards and been the subject of many conference presentations. In 2015 & 2017 I was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award at Swinburne University. I am a member of relevant professional organisations including ASCILITE and have completed portfolio based assessment to achieve CMALT recognition. I have also recently been awarded the 2017 AFR Educational Technology award & QS/Wharton Reimagine Education Bronze Award reflecting a long commitment and history of working in education, interactive media and technologies that are employed in over 140 universities and institutions around the world. t.

Co-designing Education
The best learning experiences begin with an intention, a plan and then collaboratively, a design. Facilitating this process has been where I have added value to a large number of subjects - developing intuitive design processes for subject leaders and teams.   
Consultation
In addition to consulting on the design of learning and the technology that helps them happen, my broader expertise in learning analytics, user typing and the application of game principles in education is also regularly called upon.
Research
Operating between the professional and academic space has limited my publication record, but the quality of my writing and ideas is well regarded as having highly practical value.
Speaking
I conduct regular seminars and workshops on a range of educational topics, technologies and pedagogies. Though I ground my expertise in current research, the feedback I receive, usually notes the pragmatism of what I'm presenting.
